Concussions are a common type of brain injury that can occur from a blow to the head or a jolt to the body. While the physical symptoms of a concussion, such as headaches and dizziness, are well-known, many people may not be aware that concussions can also affect communication and language skills. That’s why it is so important to see a speech-language pathologist (S-LP) after a concussion.

Research has shown that individuals who have suffered a concussion may experience a range of communication and language difficulties, such as difficulty with memory, attention, and problem-solving. S-LPs are trained to assess and treat these difficulties and can help individuals recover their communication and language skills.

For example, an S-LP may work with an individual who has difficulty with memory following a concussion. They may use strategies such as repetition, visualization, and mnemonics to help the individual remember important information. An S-LP may also work with an individual who has difficulty with attention following a concussion. They may use techniques such as breaking down tasks into smaller steps and using visual aids to help the individual stay focused.

It is important to note that communication and language difficulties following a concussion may not always be obvious. That’s why it is important to see an S-LP for an assessment even if you do not think you have any difficulties. An -SLP can also work with other healthcare professionals, such as physicians and occupational therapists, to ensure that you receive the best possible care.
